| | George Washington is known as the Father of the United States of America for having led America to freedom from Britain, and then presiding over the country as the first President of free America (1789-97). He was appointed the Commander-in-Chief of the American revolutionary forces in 1775. His successful battles on the field and diplomatic measures off it helped to ward away all fears of the nation disintegrating and led the continental army to victory over their mother country, Britain.
